Club History
The Rotary Club of Cobar was sponsored by Nyngan Rotary Club in October 1965. (Ian Moore and Lindsay Snodgrass of Nyngan Rotary). Warren Turton was nominated and formally elected as Charter President and a proposed membership of sixteen were welcomed at the first meeting of Board of Directors which was held at the Great Western Hotel Cobar.
The Club was officially chartered on 19th February 1966 at the Cobar Masonic Hall. The Rotary Club of Mudgee presented the first Minute book to the Club. Early meetings were held at the Copper City Motel, Rotary Members residences, Primary School Library, WS Brennan Centre (named after Honorary Life Member William (Bill) Brennan), Empire Hotel and finally at the Cobar Bowling and Golf Club.
One of the Clubs first major fundraiser was a cabaret ball to earn funds for the Cobar Museum. The Cobar Rotary Club Ball continued over many years. Other early fundraising ventures involved the Club’s purchase of a train and ferris wheel which were hired out to various community events. Unfortunately maintenance and liability insurance forced the sale of both items.
On the 7 th November 2015 the Club celebrated it's 50 th Birthday with an anniversary Dinner attended by some 40 Rotarians and invited guests.
The Club was pleased to have foundation Club Member Max Humphries in attendance at the Dinner.
Max has been a very active member of the Club for the whole 50 years that the Club has been in existance.
District Governor District 9670 Adrian Roach presented Club President Gary Woodman with a certificate and letter of congratulations from the President of Rotary International K .R. Ravindran
